Manchester Pride
As a documentary photographer living in the North West of England, it’s baffling that, apparently, so few photographers document Pride in a traditional way.
Photographers at the event use long lenses and focus on the colour element and not so much the humanity.
However, traditional documentary photography is rarely shot in colour.
Would shooting on black and white film mean losing impact in an image?
‘...far from it. It’s about the people there, the faces in the crowd.’
Colour isn’t necessary for that.
Ted Grant famously said “When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!”
‘Pride is so full of soul and in fact the event is so colourful that, to me, it distracts from the human element in a photograph.‘
Prints are available in an edition of 35.
